Beall’s Outlet takes advantage of open retail space to continue aggressive expansion

While most apparel retailers are still feeling their way out of the economic darkness, department store outlet chains remain in growth mode, catering to the budget-minded.

But bargain-oriented Beall’s Outlet expanded fast enough since the recession to slip ahead of its 80-store department store sibling in sales volume for the first time.

“We had a super year chasing the opportunity and expanding more aggressively in the coming year,” said Conrad Szymanski, president of the family-owned, Bradenton-based outlet chain that racked up same-store sales gains “in the upper-single digits” in fiscal 2010.

Beall’s Outlet took advantage of trading up to bigger and better stores on the cheap from what Colliers International estimates is a staggering 300 million square feet of empty big-box retail space nationally. The 120 million square feet vacated just since 2008 by the likes of Circuit City, Linens n’ Things and supermarkets equals all the shopping center space in Baltimore, Cincinnati and Kansas City combined.

Beall’s laid claim to more than 2 million square feet of it, moving existing stores to bigger quarters and expanding from 437 to 456 stores while pushing its northern frontier into Kentucky. Cost Savings, Sales Help L’Oréal’s First-Half Profit

PARIS—L’Oréal SA, the world’s largest cosmetics company by revenue, said Wednesday its first-half profit jumped 21%, as a sharp sales increase and drastic cost cuts drove a rebound.

The French company, owner of such brands as Maybelline, L’Oréal Paris and Lancôme, said net profit reached €1.31 billion ($1.66 billion) in the first six months of the year, up from €1.08 billion a year earlier. Last month, L’Oréal reported sales had risen 10% in the first half to €9.67 billion.

The jump in profit confirms L’Oréal’s recovery from a difficult year in 2009, when the economic crisis caused consumers to keep a tighter grip on their cash. Those initiatives have started to pay off this year. New lines of cheaper and more basic products outside of its existing brands netted hesitant spenders. Expansion into new categories such as deodorant increased its business. The professional products division, which sells hair products to salons, also increased its profitability.

While many consumer-goods groups have warned of a tougher second half because of rising raw materials prices, L’Oréal has remained optimistic. The higher price tags on its products mean it has more of a cushion than other companies with tighter margins.

“We are tackling the second half with confidence,” Mr. Agon said in a statement. “[We] intend over the full year to keep on strengthening our worldwide positions and the profitability of our businesses.”

The award for Best Collaboration at the MTV Video Music Awards is by far the newest entry on the list of categories. It’s appropriate that Best Collaboration return this year, as it has been a killer year for artists getting together and making a little magic.
